Level 10 Blood Elf Hunter Questline Walkthrough

I couldn’t find any quick information on who it is that starts the questline to tame my first pet, so I’m making it. I remembered that for my dwarf hunter, the trainer was not in Ironforge, so I figured that the trainer for Blood elves would not be in Silvermoon. Wrong.

Upon reaching level 10, hunters gain the ability to tame their pets, after completing a questline. The questline starts with Oninath in Silvermoon (84,26). He sends you to Farstrider Retreat to speak with Lieutenant Dawnrunner (60,63).

The kind Lieutenant sends you off to tame a Crazed Dragonhawk. I just ran out the door to the North and tamed one right away. Nice and simple. Run back and complete the quest to pick up a quest to tame an Elder Springpaw. I spotted a level 8 to the West of the Retreat and tamed it. The final taming leg is for a Mistbat. This one took some running. Follow the Dead Scar all the way to the border on the river. Staying on the East side, there are some mistbats on the other shore. I had to settle for a level 10 and tamed it (barely) to finish the questline.

I ran back to the Retreat and went on back to Silvermoon to do some pet training. When I went back out into the world, I tamed a level 9 Elder Springpaw and we can hunt without stopping. He has more HP than me and does about 11dps already.

Update with screenshots:

Due to the vast number of comments on this post and people e-mailing saying that I’m wrong, I re-rolled a hunter again and here is exactly what happens when you hit 10 as a Blood Elf hunter.

At level 10, I ran to Silvermoon and went to the above-mentioned location of Oninath. Lo! There is a ! above his head.
Oninath

He offers me the quest in addition to his normal hunter trainer abilities.

Here is what the quest says to do:

Here is the lovely Dawnrunner at the above-mentioned location:

Do you plan on trying a dragonhawk to see the abilities? I wonder what kind of goodies one gets from them, if anything, or even if they are a good pet to have. Perhaps they just look pretty.

  • Gitr (Author) said:

    I just might do that.

Do any of you recall what that addon is that tells you a beast’s abilities and food preferences before you attempt to tame it? I really need that one again.

  • Excaliber said:

yeah its called Fizzwidgets Hunter Helper or somethin close to that, great mod. Another is Fizzwidget TrackMenu, trust me,saves u tons of space!!!!!

My Blood Elf Hunter tamed a Dragonhawk. The fire breath is pretty cool, and it’s an AoE, so it seems like it would be an aggro magnet like Screech is. The Golden Dragonhawk Hatchling is a perfect match for the larger version.

  • Gitr (Author) said:

LOL. I never got around to releasing my smaller cat last night to tame one. I need to find one closer to my level, now.

Thanks for the info on its ability.

  • z said:

Hay the thing that tells you about the animal there is a hunter ability i think for lvl 24 called beast lore here is what it is

    Beast Lore
    40 Mana 40 yd range
    Instant cast
Gather information about the target beast. The tooltip will display damage, health, armor, any special resistances, and diet. In addition, Beast Lore will reveal whether or not the creature is tameable and what abilities the tamed creature has.

    sorry about the length

  • Gitr (Author) said:

Thanks, Z. Yeah, I got that 3 levels ago. :) It works just fine, even better than an addon. LOL.

Hay i got a question how do i get addons to work i tried a damage meter it didn’t work im going to try one that gives me more bars now are they safe?

  • Jikksta said:

Z, I would go to wowwiki.com and check out their addon section, it’ll answer all your questions and more.
A good site to get addons from is Curse Gaming, and for your purpose of adding more bars I have heard (but haven’t used) good things about Bongos.

If you study up on that pet youd learn its stats are worthless, the fires cool, but it has very little strength, armor, etc…

  • Gitr (Author) said:

If you have been to the hunter trainers in SM, then you have where he is. I put up the coords in the post for ya.

  • Gitr (Author) said:

At level 10, when I got to him, he had an ! above his head to send me to Farstrider Retreat. I just checked some more and found this:

    http://wow.allakhazam.com/db/quest.html?wquest=9617

It says it is given by Tana, who is in the same room. Strange.

  • Afro said:

    Hello!

I have the same problem too. I went to SM to speak with Orinath but he doesn’t have a quest for taming the pet :-(
    Can you help me?

  • Gitr (Author) said:

    No.

I’m beginning to wonder…are you a Blood Elf? Maybe that’s it. I’ve been through 3 Belf hunters, all the same. We have 3 hunters in the guild over 10 now, all the same. Call a GM if this doesn’t work.

  • Nevaru said:

Confirmed thanks a ton, I wasted alot of time trying to figure this out by myself being my first time this helped alot. Orinath is in the Silvermoon Hunters Lodge in the Farstriders Square (northern most building, he’s on the right as you go in)

Awesome, would’ve been wandering around forever without this. As soon as I finished it up, went through the translocator to Undercity and tamed me a Worg!

  • Gitr (Author) said:

Great, and glad I could help, Xtiin. Thanks for dropping a line to let us know how aweome this is. :)

  • Taitan said:

umm ok after i tame all three quest beast the NPC sends me to find some one in silvermoon city i cannot find this person help plz.

  • Gitr (Author) said:

ummm. Sure, I’ll help you, but I feel like having some fun with this.

First, you need to tell me who so I don’t go spend 5 minutes looking for everyone else.

“Speak with Halthenis in Silvermoon City.”

Ok. Go to Oninath. Now look in the opposite corner of the same room. /ahaha!!!!! Lookie there! Who would have thunk there’d be a pet trainer in the same room as a hunter trainer?

    /raises hand

Sorry for poking fun at you. I feel better now. Thanks for helping the others out with the same question.

  • Taitan said:

wow it’s ok i wouldn’t have thunk it cause well i was just following the story line XD

I just helped my daughters boyfriend (he rolled a BE) get to lv10 on his brand new hunter, we went to silvermoon hunter trainer (im also a hunter) I personally had the quest start there, but he did not, so we just went back to farstrider square and there it was.

  • craftsman85 said:

Your info worked like a charm. The updated comments weren’t even necessary to find the hunter who gave quest. The PPL complaining are idiots and need to learn to read correctly. Thanks for great info.

    Craftsman,

You are awesome!! Tell it like it is, brother!! I was beginning to wonder… LOL.

Thanks the info, it help alot! :)

  • Isabelle said:

Umm… I did what you said and when I tried to tame Crazed Dragonhawk it started attacking me. I didn’t attack back but continued the “taming process”. But when it was done it kept attacking me… I couldn’t attack back (because it was actually my pet) so I died

  • Gitr (Author) said:

Have you ever tamed a pet before? This is how it is done. What happened here is called a bug, because it’s never happened to me with any of my 7 hunters and hundreds of pets. You got a freak incident if this was your first try.

    This guide stands as correct.

  • Dahunter said:

which do u think is better to have the crazy dragonhawk elder springpaw or mistbat

  • Dahunter said:

Are pets easily killed when you first tame them? I mean if they aren’t, I don’t want to be sacrificing myself 100 times and find out that everythings in vain.

  • Blah, blah said:

I will be the brave one and admit my stupidity and explain why it did not work for some people…we were looking in Silvermoon Ruins, not realizing there was a different Sivermoon City. Looking back it seems dumb, but you may want to add it in you guide to save the dumb blondes like me some frustration. Thanks!

  • Gitr (Author) said:

    Thanks, Blah Blah.

That would explain it. I will incorporate that note soon.

  • Peter said:

The addons did not work for me well. I will try again.

  • Mycah said:

    For Dahunter:
Probably the Elder Springpaw is the best to get at this level. (Unless you have a couple of 70′s that will run you through the Dranei starting area… a lvl 10 BE Hunter with a Ravager lol). The cat does the most damage and attacks the faster, will have more health than you at lvl 9, and comes standard with Claw Rank II. (At lvl 9 anyway.)

When you first tame your pet, you need to feed it until it is happy, so that it will begin getting training points that you can use a little later to give special bonuses to your pet, like Stamnia, and other useful things. Your pet will not be easy to kill, just remember it is a symbiotic relationship, your pet is not a voidwalker, use it for added DPS, don’t forget that just because you have a pet doesn’t mean you can’t kite mobs anymore!

  • Faolin said:

your guide is awsome, I,m new so found it very helpful. Thanks

    What’s a BE?

  • Gitr (Author) said:

Really? Look at the title of the post. Maybe you’ll figure out what a Belf is too.

  • Gitr (Author) said:

    Congratulations! Dumbest question of 2008.

  • d said:

ive finished the hunter questes but still dont have the option to train my pet, is this somethin new, a bug, or could i have missed somethin

  • Gitr (Author) said:

Sounds like you need to try another class – hunters are called huntards because they are so easy to play.

  • zorlop said:

does anyone have tips on traing to get to lv 10

  • Gitr (Author) said:

Training STARTS at level 10 – if you can’t get to level 10 as a hunter in under 2 hours, switch classes – because you will not enjoy it.

  • HuntersHive said:

:) ) Blood Elf – First. Troll next…. I have 1 question. In Durotar – Ogrimmar ( There’s a Hunter trainer “Thotar). This guy seems to give the taming quests. Now…If, for Lieutenant Dawnrunner you have to talk with Oninath, for Thotar with Who you have to speak?… P.S. I got my Troll first time to lvl 10 (Hunter OFC) but when I went to Thotar there was no quest… THX ! :D

  • Gitr (Author) said:

I still fail to see how your problems with the trainers is my problem. I’ve never played a troll. Move along to a troll site.

  • ben said:

I will try it but i think the dragon hatchling is much better than the elder but thanks anyway

  • TiAgrA said:

hya … can i use the coord. in wotlk?

  • DarKStaR said:

I actually picked the taming quest up straight from the Leiutenant Dawnrunner at Farstrider Retreat as I hit level 10 while handing some quests in there and just picked up all available quests.

My guess is the people who can’t get the Quest from the Trainer in Silvermoon already have the quest from Farstrider Retreat, hence no quest to go talk to her as you already have ^^

For Training pets, the pet trainer says your pet levels at half of your leveling speed, so doing the math, you get your first Talent point at level 10, the pets get their 1st Talent Point at level 20, make sense?
As they level up the skills they have that they use in battle (claw, bite, growl etc) level up automatically when THE PET LEVELS, not the hunter.

    Hope this helps
