My name says it all...

I went from Windows ME to XP and loved it. Spent about 3 years on XP, then in late 06, out came Vista. There were mixed emotions about it, but like a lot of people, I took the plunge. Immediately, I found myself dealing with a faulty Windows registry, slow PC performance and I even had to restore Windows Vista on a couple occassions. To make a long story short, I ended up going back to XP last week. I think I will eventually go to Windows 7, but for the time being, XP will have to do. At least I no longer have to deal with a slow Vista PC!

This problem is caused by Vista's securtiy setting set by UAC (User Account Control). It can be over come as described in the post above, but you can disable it completely if that doesn't work by doing the following.

1. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
2. In Control Panel, click User Accounts And Family Safety.
3. Click User Accounts.
4. Click Turn User Account Control On Or Off
5. Clear the Use User Account Control (UAC) To Help Protect Your Computer checkbox, and then click OK.
6. When prompted, restart your computer

Capn - Growl here reporting from Afghanistan - you'll likely have this problem even with SP-2 for Vista - I could be wrong - but the issue here is the update program simply needs to have the "rights" to install its patch on your drive. My guess is that SP-2 isn't going to downgrade how it manages security. Honestly - even though this is clunky and makes a one step process into a 2 step - it's at least nice to see that Vista is taking some pains for securities sake.

My solution is two fold at the moment....

1) Run Mac OS (happily)
2) When I need a PC - it runs XP - XP is a fairly solid OS in my opinion and it makes my teeth ache 50% less than Vista does.

I'm not getting Vista until SP2 is out or I see all of the programs I want not compatible with XP.

Hmm, we just got a new PC for my son which comes with Vista SP1 preloaded. I was planning to buy us each a copy of Diablo 3 when it comes out (when ever that is). I hope we don't have similar install/patch problems there.
